Before we discuss the main topic about painting my house exterior colors, the first we will give you three general tips for selecting an attractive exterior paint palette.
3 Tips for Choosing the Right House Color
Below, you will discover the best tips to choosing paint colors for the outside of your house. Take a look!
1. Consider going bold
You can consider to choose a bold color for exterior of your house. Even, you shouldn’t feel obligated to paint your house exterior in accordance with everyone else’s in your neighborhood or use a color that is considered a must for the style of your home. However, you may have to limit the bold colors to accents such as on your front door, window trim, the fascia, the door, and so on.
2. Consider the style of your home
Some examples of architectural styles one of which is a Victorian style home have intricate details that look fantastic painted in a stand-out hue. Another architectural styles like Spanish colonial revival style house tend to look best with a more restrained paint palette. In conclusion, you should do research and see what colors a house like yours traditionally has been painted.
3. Consider your neighbors
Look around your neighborhood to see if there is a common palette before you begin looking at the endless array of paint swatches at your local paint or home improvement store. Although, that’s not to say you should paint exterior of your house with the exact same color as your neighbor. Actually, don’t do that because nothing looks more cookie cutter than row after row of houses painted with the very similar or same colors. However, if you discover that most of the exterior of houses on your neighborhood are painted brown, grey and very neutral shades of white you may not want to paint your house, say, with lavender color.
How to Choose Exterior Paint Colors for My House
Here, you can see three houses with a new exterior paint palette. After you see it, which of the following suggestions do you think fits best?
1. Exterior House Colors Split Level Home
How to selecting a paint scheme for a 1964 split-level home include a few questions such as: what bold color (orange? turquoise?) to paint the front door, whether to give the columns and the window trim an accent color, and how to tie in the tan brick and the gray roof.
Option 1. This home has more green and less yellow in it, so I think it would work well with the tan brick, and it also can make a terrific backdrop for a dramatic orange front door as well as the light tan color (at top right) is the column and trim color.
Option 2. This palette features a nice, light taupe-gray color for the siding, a light gray (that has a touch of green in it) for the columns and trim, and a turquoise color for the front door. While I would like to move away from the current “vanilla” color of the siding, but I would avoid going too dark, and there appear to be a good number of trees that casting shadows near the house, and the tan brick at the base of the house is rather dark, so can make this palette look light and bright without being too vanilla.
2. Exterior Paint Colors with Brick and Siding
How to choose brick and siding colors:
Option 1. This is a cooler take on the palette. The brick gets painted a medium greenish-grey hue, the siding stays light with a soft grey, the shutters remain dark — with a deep greenish-gray color, and the front door gets a beautiful French blue color.
Option 2. I painted brick with a more grounded color like the rich taupe brown shade shown in the bottom swatch. I would replace with a retractable screen door (or I would remove the front screen door) and then paint the front door a deep red color. The siding gets the lightest tan color, and the shutters get the darkest taupe color.
3. Art Moderne House Style
You may be wondering, how to paint a house with the streamline moderne (art moderne) style, break up the single hue with accent colors or only one color.
Option 1. As the main house color, I would use one of the darker greys, then I use the remaining colors as accents for the ribbing detail, the balcony columns, and the garage door.
Option 2. On this art moderne style house you could really do some interesting things with color. I would paint the horizontal swaths (the balconies) with the darker shade, and paint the body of the house the lightest shade. For the garage door, I would use one of the two darker accent colors, and, if you’re feeling particularly daring, you can use the other accent color to set off the ribbing detail.
You can use color as a tool to either hide or enhance architectural details. However, you can paint a contrasting hue from whatever surrounds it if you want something to stand out. Deemphasize the same hue as whatever is surrounding them or paint any features of your house that you want to hide.
